Signs of Giftedness and the Two Gifted Profiles

Giftedness, signs of giftedness and gifted profiles

A modern perspective on giftedness

The contemporary definition of giftedness, as revised by Renzulli and Delcourt in 2018, goes beyond merely measuring intelligence quotient (IQ). Today, giftedness is understood as a complex interaction between intelligence, creativity, and commitment. Intelligence primarily refers to high-level reasoning abilities, while creativity involves generating new ideas, solving problems innovatively, and adapting to various life challenges. Commitment encompasses enthusiasm, motivation, self-confidence, and a sense of accomplishment.

Factors influencing the development of giftedness

The development of giftedness is influenced by several personality and environmental factors. Gifted individuals often display traits such as charisma, courage, intuition, a strong sense of accomplishment, as well as marked energy and spirituality. Environmental factors include socio-economic conditions, culture, early childhood stimulation, parental personality, education, and hereditary factors.

It is important to note that there is no direct linear relationship between intelligence and creativity. Giftedness requires divergent thinking, mental flexibility, personality traits that allow risk-taking, openness to new experiences, the ability to tolerate ambiguity, and strong motivation.

The development of creativity and giftedness

Creativity can manifest from a young age. For instance, a child who solves a school problem creatively may excel in their studies and become an expert in their field as an adult, potentially receiving honors and scholarships. Although giftedness is not directly genetic, it can have hereditary aspects.

Neurophysiological aspects and development

The brain function of gifted individuals remains largely poorly understood, but some observations are made: thicker myelination (more white matter), a greater number of synapses and increased synaptic activity, higher excitability of the limbic system and amygdala, elevated levels of REM sleep, as well as superior activation of parietal areas and increased gray matter density between frontal and parietal regions.

Early development and sensory traits

Gifted individuals may show early development. At birth, skills such as oculomotor and axial neuromotor functions are already advanced. Other notable characteristics include early expressive language skills (e.g., first words at 7-8 months) and advanced gross motor development (e.g., first steps at 10 months) before the typical ages.

In terms of sensory neurophysiological processing, gifted individuals process sensory information with greater speed and depth. They also exhibit hypersensitivity, heightened emotional reactivity, and strong empathy, with better discrimination and increased sensitivity to subtle stimuli.

Homogeneous and heterogeneous profiles of giftedness

About 60 to 75% of gifted individuals exhibit a homogeneous profile, characterized by consistent cognitive development, ease of learning, sensitivity to others, and good academic performance. However, these individuals may also experience boredom with the school curriculum and social anxiety.

In contrast, 25 to 40% of gifted individuals have a heterogeneous profile, marked by unstable cognitive development, learning difficulties that can mask their giftedness, as well as intuition and creativity. These individuals may also show hypersensitivity and emotional problems. Their giftedness is often associated with comorbid conditions such as ADHD, learning disabilities or developmental coordination disorder (dyspraxia). They are considered twice-exceptional.

If you recognize this profile

A giftedness assessment documents the complete cognitive profile, strengths and vulnerabilities alike, through an in-depth interview and an age-appropriate Wechsler intelligence scale.
